Welly to the world

Two digital professionals quit their 9-5 day jobs in the coolest little capital to go on an adventure. We've bucked the trends, managed to buy a house, save some money and now we're jobless and about to see where the world takes us.

Renting out our slice of paradise – from property managers to tenants

Owning a home has always been one of our collective goals. Andrew and I were lucky enough to find our own little patch of New Zealand 4 years ago. We purchased the house without any dramas and have since had a wonderful time here. It was our home when I got my first adult job, it was our home when we got married. It was the home where we parented our two cats. In our time we’ve extended the deck, added a shed, painted the fence and added an attic but now we’ve had to decide what to do with it while we go away.

Renting our house

The property market in Wellington, and the rest of the country, has been going gangbusters, and we are confident we could probably sell up and make a good return on investment. That feels like a good idea now, and seeing a whole pile of cash in our bank would feel good and make this adventure a whole lot more fun, but it would also make it really hard when we decide to return to NZ and have nothing. So, we’re going to make the most of the busy rental market and get some tenants in.

Property Managers

After a bit of research, some phonecalls and some visits we settled on a company called ‘manage my property‘. The team have been super helpful and answered all our questions – everything from “How do we get rent paid to us?” to “What happens if the dishwasher explodes?” and “Will you find nice people to look after our cottage?”. We first engaged with Richard, our property manager in 2016 and he gave us lots of information and things to ponder. He suggested we manage our expectations for rent around the $400 per week which was a surprise. By the time he came around to take our photos Richard let us know the market was so busy that he was going to suggest a higher rent.

Listing the house

So, the photos were taken and the manage my property team put the listing up on Trade Me. Within the first hour we had 60 views!

Once the house was online the interest started ticking up and before we knew it we had two couples come through the house to check it out. One of them even applied right there and then!

The perfect tenants

When Richard called later in the week with good news we couldn’t believe our luck. The couple who applied over the weekend had an excellent track record and were ready to move in ASAP. Everyone signed all the paperwork at lightning speed and we started the (hideous)  process of moving out.
